Lutron: lighting control systems
At Worldlight we have spent years working with the best control systems on the market. We are now adding Lutron to our control and home automation services, and here is why.
What is Lutron?
Lutron is an American company founded in 1961 and a pioneer in lighting control. They invented the world’s first solid-state dimmer and have spent more than six decades perfecting the way people interact with light.
Today they are a global reference in residential, commercial, and hospitality control systems.
Their offer is straightforward: smart lighting, motorised shades, and full environmental control, all integrated into a single, seamless, and reliable system.
How does it work?
Lutron uses its own wireless communication protocol called Clear Connect. It is an RF (radio frequency) technology dedicated exclusively to lighting and shade control, which makes it exceptionally stable and free from interference with other devices in the home such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
The system is made up of three main components:
- A central processor that manages all the logic of the system.
- Control devices such as dimmers, keypads, and remotes.
- Loads, meaning the luminaires and shade motors that receive the commands.
Everything is programmed to suit each project, creating lighting scenes that adapt to every moment of the day or type of activity.
What systems does Lutron offer?
For residential
- HomeWorks is the flagship system for high-end homes. It provides complete, integrated control of all the lighting and shades in a house, with beautifully designed keypads and a highly refined user experience. It is the system used in the most demanding residential projects in the world.
- RadioRA 3 is a more accessible but equally robust option, ideal for homes where comfort and control are the priority without the full scale of HomeWorks.
For commercial spaces and hotels
The Athena and Vive systems cover the needs of offices, hotels, and public spaces. They allow energy consumption to be managed, efficiency regulations to be met, and memorable lighting experiences to be created in lobbies, restaurants, and meeting rooms.
Lutron vs KNX and Casambi
We work with KNX and Casambi, and each system has its place. Here are the main differences you can find in each system.
KNX is a well-established open European standard. It is powerful and flexible for large, complex installations, but it requires dedicated wiring from the start of the project and advanced technical programming. It is the leading choice for large buildings and installations with many integrated subsystems.
Casambi is a wireless protocol based on Bluetooth Mesh. It is very easy to install and configure, making it ideal for renovations or spaces where cabling is not possible or simply not wanted. Its strength lies in its simplicity and lower installation costs.
Lutron sits in a different space. It is wireless like Casambi, but with a proprietary protocol that is far more robust and interference-free. Also it delivers a superior user experience and finish quality, with keypads and controls that offer a tactile and aesthetic feel that is hard to match, not being an open standard like KNX, but within its ecosystem it provides full integration and outstanding reliability.
In short:
- If you need maximum integration with other systems in a complex building, KNX remains the reference.
- If you need a simple wireless solution, Casambi is an excellent choice.
- If the project demands the best user experience, premium finishes, and a system built exclusively for lighting and shades, Lutron is a great option.
Why is Worldlight adding Lutron?
We design lighting environments where every detail matters. Lutron fits perfectly with our philosophy because it is not just technology, it is an experience.
We can now offer our clients three paths depending on the project: the solidity of KNX, the flexibility of Casambi, and the excellence of Lutron.
